Matrimonial Comedy

Maria and Wiktor’s marriage is in crisis. Maria, a highly educated woman, feels neglected and used by her three children and her husband and no longer wishes to be a housewife. Her daily domestic chores are starting to irritate her. To make matters worse, she finds a picture of another woman in her husband’s clothes. Shocked, she decides to leave. On the train she is robbed by Gypsies; and her friends in Warsaw, who she planned to visit, are abroad. She does not breakdown or cry. Instead, at the Warsaw rail station she befriends a clochard named Remek, who, by the way, is a doctor of philosophy. Shortly thereafter she finds an advertisement looking for a person who speaks English and Italian. Soon Maria finds a well paying job as a translator. At the same time her husband can barely keep up with his domestic duties. This is a wonderful comedy from the days of early capitalism in Poland. Light, easy and pleasant to enjoy. Great scenes, super dialogue, and Ewa Kasprzyk is terrific.
