Grain of Truth
(Ziarno prawdy)
Sandomierz is a picturesque Polish town full of churches and museums. Early one morning in the spring, a woman’s naked body is found outside a former synagogue. Someone has slashed her throat open– and it looks as if it was done with the enormous razor found lying nearby. Quite by chance, Public Prosecutor Teodor Szacki happens to be on the scene. Szacki conducts the investigation with the help of an aging policeman and a reluctant lady prosecutor. Gradually he discovers the subtle ins and outs of local society and history. In his efforts to solve the mystery he investigates a love triangle, an ancient Jewish ritual and some Nazi symbols. But it only takes one careless moment for the demons trapped in the cupboard to break free. This time the crack appears in the beautiful, historic Polish city of Sandomierz. Stereotypes and superstitions are unleashed. There are two more murders in the same, ritual style, generating a wave of anti-Semitic hysteria in a historic tourist city, when Public Prosecutor Szacki digs in the past for the solution. A legend of blood is revived, accusations of ritual murder fly, and as the anti-Semitic hysteria rises, so does the sense of threat. Everything seems vitally significant, but at the same time nothing is what it appears to be. Public Prosecutor Teodor Szacki has escaped from the capital to the provinces in search of peace, but now he faces the most challenging case of his career. Amid the lies, half-truths and distortions, the white-haired Szacki tries to find a grain of truth.
